Regional Rules and Regulations Supplement

This web page was created to help Drivers find answers to questions that may only affect our region and applies to every driver. The decision behind each statement is based on feedback from customers and years of knowledge and experience by dozens of drivers. Not all decisions are easy to understand on the surface. However, it’s important to know that the underlying reasons for each declaration or rule are either event efficiency (more track time) or safety, both of which are ultimately in favor of the Driver. It is our mission to provide a fun and safe environment for all drivers to enjoy and we welcome your thoughts and ideas on how to improve.

Questions not answered here can be found in the CCR.

Items in this update are in RED.

CAR NUMBER RESERVATION and RENEWAL

  • All numbers expire December 31 of each year.
  • Number renewal takes place January 1-31 each year.
  • Reserved numbers must be used once within each calendar year in order to be eligible for renewal the following year.
  • New or unused numbers may be reserved at any time. First come, first served.
  • Car Number Request/Renewal Form *Note: Renewal option will only be available during the renewal period Jan. 1-31.

GENERAL (ALL DRIVERS)

  • Anyone driving on the track must be a NASA Member. (Except during Lunchtime Lapping)
  • Helmets must be worn at all times while on track. (Except during Lunchtime Lapping)
  • Safety belts must be properly worn at all times while on track.
  • Camera mounts - Camera mounts which attach to a driver or passenger headrest are strictly prohibited. See NASA CCR for for additional information regarding use and mounting of cameras.
  • On-Line registration will close for each event the Monday night before the event. After on-line registration has closed, event fee increases by $50.
  • NASA Cancellation Policy – read it here.
  • NOTICE TO AWD CAR OWNERS: If your AWD car needs towing at the track, please be advised of this information from our towing crew: All STi owners must ensure that their DCCD switch is in the manual mode to prevent damage to their drivetrains. Please consult the owner’s manual for more information.

All other AWD cars, note that the only safe way to tow an AWD car (at the track) is all four wheels on the ground, or with one axle lifted at limited speeds and distance; and only when OEM lift points are still available. If OEM lift or tow points are removed, disabled, covered, or not safety usable because of aftermarket items such as larger bumpers, ground effects, or larger intercoolers, NASA may not be able to retrieve your vehicle to the paddock and will take great care to move it to a safe place on the track. Arrangements to retrieve your vehicle from the track can be made with race control. This might likely be hours later during a break or even at the end of the day.

These instructions and warnings are only in place to make your track experience safer and less stressful. With the increasing popularity of AWD vehicles at our events, we are concerned over how to properly manage these vehicles to everyone’s satisfaction. Racers are required to have a tow point that can also safely lift an end of your vehicle as well, lack of such can cause a dangerous track situation.

HPDE DRIVERS

  • Long Sleeve Shirts are recommended.
  • Passengers are allowed in Groups 3, 4 & TT ONLY.
  • Passengers must be at least 18 years old and sign a release form at Registration before getting on the track. Special wristbands will be issued for passengers.
  • All drivers are required to have a wristband and a track-pass to get on track.
  • All cars are required to have a tech sticker before going on track.
  • You may and should have your car tech completed at any SAE Certified shop before each event. Simply have the tech shop complete the tech form and stamp it with their ASE number. If you have an SAE Certified shop perform your tech inspection you DO NOT need to bring your car to tech - simply bring your helmet and SAE stamped tech form to tech.
  • Attending download sessions following each track session time is mandatory.
  • Each group will be scheduled for 4-20 minute track sessions each day.
  • Instructors must be certified and must sign up on-line at least 30 days before an event.

RACE DRIVERS

  • All double race events will have a 20 minute practice, a 15 minute qualifying and 40 minute race on Saturday and the same for Sunday.
  • Each event will have a minimum of two points-races.
  • To qualify for a Regional or Series Championship, a driver must start at least 50% of the scheduled points-races.
  • During events with more then one race in one day for any given class, a driver may change classes prior to the start of the first qualifying session of that day. (No class changes once qualifying has started)
  • Series Directors must report all non-compliance discoveries to Race Director.
  • Dyno's - There is no guarantee that a Dyno will be at any event. It is the driver's responsibility to always have their dyno sheet available. Most, if not all, series rules require that the cars dyno sheet be submitted to the Series Director and a copy retained in the cars logbook. (Pertains only to series with a HP/WT rule.)
  • Body Contact Reports MUST be completed and submitted to Driver Info within 30 minutes of the conclusion of the session which the incident occurred.
  • Appeals of an official ruling by a Race Director or an Incident Review Board (IRB) must be filed at Registration within 30 minutes of the ruling.
  • Series Director may introduce “specialty” Qualifying and/or Race formats. (Inverted Starts, Qualifying Races, etc.)
  • Point Drops- A Regional Winner is determined after applying the number of drops for the class to the final points standing at the end of the season. A race drop or “drop” is defined as a single points race, not a race weekend, which has a minimum of two points races.

If the class you compete in is not listed on this page, defer to the class rules. If the class rules do not specify the number of drops, then your class will use the standing regional rule of 2 drops. If you are unclear as to the number of drops for your class, contact your Series Director.
    • AI/AIX - 3 drops
    • FFR – 2 drops
    • SM – 3 drops
    • SE30 - 3 drops
    • TT - 3 drops
    • CMC – Best 12 races from both Regions

  • Event Tech Inspection -
    • If you have a current annual inspection, take your completed self-tech form, race license and logbook to your Series Director. He will sign your logbook and issue your event tech sticker.
    • If you do not have a current annual inspection, you will need to take the above, your car and gear to the tech station located in the paddock. They will complete your annual inspection, note it in your logbook and issue your event tech sticker.
  • Toyo Tire Contingency - If your race class participates in the Toyo Tire Contingency program you must take your completed contingency form to your Series Director. He will verify that you have met the requirements for the program and sign your sheet. Then send your completed form and a copy of the official race results to Toyo. You can find all the information here.
  • Crossover events – Drivers will earn points in both MW & GL Regions at Crossover events.
  • On any day that has more than one points race, contingencies will only be awarded for the first points race of that day. Subsequent races (same day), qualifying races, or any other session session called a "race" will not be eligible contingency awards.
  • The following classes are supported at all NASA Great Lakes and Midwest Regional Events.

Time Trial Drivers

  • Protests of Time Trial vehicles or driver conduct must be made within 30 minutes of the last on track session of the day. Protests must be submitted to the Race Director. This supersedes TTR Section 12 page 38, by adding a protest submission deadline and where it states that  protests must be submitted to the Region TT Director or their substitute.

2009 Enduro

  • Points will be awarded per the 2009 CCR. No point drops.
  • Cool suits and other driver cooling devices may not be serviced during refueling.
  • Penalties for all offenses other than pit stop related will be dealt with after the race. The goal of the Race Director is to not take away what cannot be returned.
  • All time type penalties will be assessed by subtracting laps.
  • Spilling fuel (whether on the ground or inside the vehicle) will result in a minimum of a 5-minute penalty, to be served before the conclusion of the race in the car’s pit location.

Volunteers

  • Volunteer Points Reward System. Volunteers who help at our events will accumulate Driver Points, redeemable for time on the track. Each day a volunteer has the opportunity to accumulate up to 4 points. One day of driving at any event will be 8 points for the 2009 season. The points are transferable. Points are valid for 10 years. They are good only in the issuing region.
